19.07.08 09:35
A Warner Bros. exec today said the Batman sequel "THE DARK KNIGHT" has set a single-day Box Office record by taking in $66.4 million on opening day. The movie's Friday haul surpasses the previous record of $59.8 million set last year by "Spider-Man 3." "THE DARK KNIGHT" also might break the opening weekend record of $151.1 million that also was posted by "Spider-Man 3." Warner Bros. head of distribution Dan Fellman says the death of co-star Heath Ledger and the buzz about his frenzied performance as the Batman villain Joker was a big part of the movie's allure. Some estimate, that the first weekend's gross could well approach the level of the movies entire production costs. [WB/AP/SVR/FILM-TV.COM]

Batman's "THE DARK KNIGHT"/TRAILER iPhone set a box office record for a midnight debut, bringing in $18.5 million Friday from its midnight screening in 3,040 theaters, according to tracking firm Media By Numbers. This figures top by far the 2005 performance of "Star Wars Episode III: The Revenge of the Sith," which took in $16.9 million at its debut. "The Dark Knight" figure did not include any of its 3 a.m. or 6 a.m. showings. As die-hard fans wearing Batman gear headed to thousands of sold-out 12:01 a.m. screenings on Friday, industry watchers predicted "The Dark Knight" would pass the $100 million mark on its opening weekend.
